What is HeartMath?

I teach “coping” skills to nearly all my clients because… let’s be real, we all probably need to have better tools to handle stressors. Those stressors can include Atlanta traffic (come on how many of you have lost it in traffic?), interactions with significant others and children (little ones or grown ones,) work issues, and so much more.

The coping skills I teach may also be called mindfulness skills. I don’t teach meditation skills, but I do teach skills like:

  • counting all the rectangles or red items in a room
  • feeling the ground push up against your feet
  • 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – notice 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can, 1 thing you can taste
  • creating a grounding box
  • progressive relaxation
  • relaxation exercises

Ok, I have lots of things I teach, so I am so excited to add to my toolbox. HeartMath has taught me some very effective skills in helping clients learn to better regulate themselves.

We can use those skills in session like when we are using EMDR and clients go above or under their “window of tolerance” (I’ll talk about that in another post.)

You can also use those skills (and this is the best part) in your life when you encounter stressors. These are concrete skills; I ask you to purchase a biofeedback device, and we work together to learn how to use those skills in every day life.

Heart Rate Variability, biofeedback and technology that lets you “see” how well you are practicing are all tools I can teach. And, what I offer is often times more affordable than you’ll find in the Atlanta area.

If you are interested, HeartMath skills only need two to eight sessions to teach and can make a huge difference in your life. Contact me for more information. You may refer your clients out for learning better skills to stay in the “window of tolerance” if you use EMDR. Or if your clients experience struggles with dissociative features, I can help in teaching tangible, practical skills in learning to stay more regulated. I have been an adjunct therapist to a number of other counselors. So please contact me if I can be of service.

I also offer stand-alone skills for people who just need a few sessions to learn to better able to handle their stressors. So, this isn’t long term therapy. We simply focus on how you, the client can better handle what life routinely hands you.
