Mindfulness HeartMath Coaching

drop of water splashingFirst of all, mindfulness is quite different than meditation.

From Mindful.org:

“Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.””

It is a practice developed to learn how to notice what is happening in our thoughts and feelings, thus allowing us some space to learn to develop proactive instead of reactive behaviors.

This is a useful skill to develop for all us humans! But, this can be especially helpful when we bring histories of trauma, often learning to not be aware of our bodies, our thoughts or our feelings.

Generally, we do not need a lot of sessions to develop mindfulness. Often six sessions works well to develop techniques and check to see how well they work in your day to day life. Sometimes clients come in with a need for a simple “booster” session to remind them of the skills they’ve learned or when a unique stressor comes up.

My skills in coaching mindfulness were developed in my training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) from Elisha Goldstein, PhD, and my various trainings in HeartMath. I used these skills frequently as a therapist in working with at-risk youth and trauma survivors.
